Touchmalov
Michail Markovic Touchmalov (1861-96) *
Touchmalov was a composition pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov's at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, and he probably worked on his orchestration of Musorgksy's Pictures for Vasily Vasil'yevich Bessel (1843-1907), one of the leading publishers of the time, around 1886. Touchmalov's (partial) orchestration of Musorgsky's Pictures' was first performed on 30 Nov 1891 and it was published by in 1900. Bessel had previous prepared Musorgsky's original piano version of 'Pictures' in 1886. According to the modern Kalmus reprint of Bessel, Rimsky-Korsakov 'collaborated' with Touchmalov, although this might have been a marketing ploy. A recording of this orchestration, which omits several of the earlier movements, is available on Acanta: DC22128.
More information on the orchestrations of Pictures is available in Michael Russ, 'Musorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition' (Cambridge, 1992); more details on Bessel in D.W. Krummel and S. Sadie (eds.), 'Music Printing and Publishers (London, 1980/1990).
* Alternative transliterations include 'Tusmalov' and 'Touschmaloff'.
